Our Vision for Trieste 2030

Silent,    CO2 free,    Energy efficient,    Individual,     24/7,     Autonomous,     Safe

Modern mobility concepts propagate public transportation as being the transportation method of choice, using the electric train, electric subway or battery bus, being CO2 free and reducing traffic congestion.

Sadly, public transportation requires multiple changes on a journey, be it to a supermarket or another city.

Thus the infirm elderly, the handicapped and small children are severely limited if not completely excluded from public transportation.

Only a mobility concept that can combine the benefits of public transportation with individual mobility can replace the motor vehicle.

The DTS technology does exactly that –  individual autonomous point2point transportation.

Implementing such a mobility concept can either be done in a completely new urban environment or by converting an existing urban area. Both these approaches are extremely time and cost intensive.

Trieste is in a unique situation with the Porto Vecchio (old harbour) suburb.

This consists of a 600 000 sqm unused area stretching 3 kms along the coastline directly next to the city centre. It is a mix of existing buildings, that need to be restored and empty spaces for new buildings.

All are connected by unused road- and railways.

Take for example the 2 km long beautiful promenade from Barcola to Miramare - Trieste's famous "Beach".

This is right next to the only coastal road entering Trieste, a nightmare in traffic congestion and automotive noise.

Now image a promenade within the Porto Vecchio area, where there is no noisy traffic, no parked cars, yet instant autonomous access 24/7.  Where you can relax at the sea side in tranquil bliss.

We see a four-phase approach making Trieste even more liveable and becoming the most sustainable city in the world.

Phase 1 – Demonstration / Proof of Concept

Phase 2 – Implementation within the Porto Vecchio area

Phase 3 – Expansion to selected streets within the Greater Trieste Area

Phase 4 – Conversion of the Greater Trieste Area.

Utilizing various Autonomous OnCall Carriers (for persons, grocery deliveries, cargo, existing legacy cars and specialised uses) Trieste will have mobility that is

  • low-cost,
  • CO2 free,
  • silent,
  • sustainable,
  • high capacity,
  • yet individual.

and that can completely replace the current fossil fuelled car / truck / bus mobility with no reduction in current individual benefits.

Following vehicle types are envisaged :

  • PRT – Person or Grocery Rapid Transit

  • CRT – Cargo / Car Rapid Transit

  • MSC – Mobile Services Carrier

Usage Scenarios:

  1. PRT – persons can call the nearest available PRT vehicle

    1. to take them directly to their end destination.

    2. to place packages / groceries inside and send them directly to an end destination. On arrival the recipient uses an QR code to open the vehicle and removes the packages / groceries.

    3. to take unaccompanied persons such as children directly to school.

  2. CRT – the nearest available CRT can be called

    1.  to take a legacy vehicle from / to a parking lot within Trieste to another destination or to the city boundaries.

    2. to take a container to specific location where it can be packed / unpacked and then returned to the depot

  3. MSC -    specific mobile service modules can be called 24/7

    1. to provide selected shopping at home (combining the benefits of online shopping with the selection possibility in a shop environment)

    2. to provide repair services on site (electronic equipment for example)

    3. further business cases such as conference vehicles etc.

All autonomous carriers have

  1. dual power connections via induction power from the road or side/overhead powerlines on rail.

  2. light weight battery power for short off-the-grid driving

  3. external pedestrian airbags
